Symptoms of an Ovarian Cyst

One of the frustrating things about having an ovarian cyst is that the symptoms are not necessarily specific to just ovarian cysts.  That is, many of the symptoms could also be something else and not an ovarian cyst.  That is one of the reasons why it is important to get a pelvic exam and know for sure.

Some of the common symptoms of an ovarian cyst (or ovarian cysts in the case of PCOS) are:

  • Dull pain in the lower back area
  • Pain during intercourse
  • A feeling that you have to go to the bathroom all the time (pressure on the bladder)
  • Pain preceding and continuing through your menstrual cycle
  • Pain extending down to your thighs
  • Sometimes nausea and vomiting
  • Bloated feeling in the abdomen

There are other signs too that would accompany a ruptured ovarian cyst and need to be considered as indicative of a more serious condition.
Among those are fever, intense pain (especially if you've had a cyst without pain and suddenly you have intense pain), dizziness or any other symptom of a sudden change in blood pressure and shortness of breath.

These symptoms can be verified by a pelvic exam.  Since they are not exclusively symptoms of ovarian cysts, the exam will quickly either confirm or dispel an ovarian cyst diagnosis.

Also, there are symptoms specific to certain kinds of ovarian cysts, too.  Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or PCOS for short, consists of multiple symptoms.  In the medical profession a woman is diagnosed with PCOS if she has two out of three of the common PCOS symptoms.

These symptoms include:

  • An absence of ovulation
  • An excess of androgen (a masculine hormone)
  • Multiple cysts

A woman can be diagnosed with PCOS even if she does not have multiple cysts.  The important thing to note is that she only need exhibit two of those three symptoms.

Other common symptoms of PCOS include:

  • Increased growth in body and/or facial hair
  • Obesity
  • Infertility
  • Hair loss on top of head
  • Absent, irregular or few monthly periods

It seems ironic that due to the increase in the masculine hormone androgen, a woman can at the same time lose head hair and yet develop more body/facial hair.
As with any medical issue, if you have any of the symptoms of ovarian cysts, you should get advice and treatment from a medical professional.
