Ovarian Cyst Symptoms

What are the Symptoms of Ovarian Cysts?

Symptoms of Ovarian Cysts

The symptoms of an ovarian cyst are similar to symptoms of other ailments, which is why if you experience these symptoms, you should get a pelvic exam from a physician you trust.

The most common kind of ovarian cyst is called a follicular functional cyst which is produced during the menstrual cycle.  It is the sac which contains the egg that has sealed up and filled with fluid, becomes hard and after a size of 2 cm it is considered a cyst.

Common symptoms are:

  • A dull pain in your lower back area
  • Pressure on the bladder that makes you feel as if you need to urinate frequently
  • Pain preceding and throughout your period
  • Paid during sexual intercourse
  • Pain extending down to your thighs
  • At times, nausea and sometimes vomitting
  • A bloated feeling in the abdomen
This is not an all inclusive list, as every woman may feel the severity of an ovarian cyst (or cysts) differently.

If the cyst is twisted (what is called torsion) then chances are very high that the pain will be excruciatingly severe.  In these cases seek medical attention quickly in order to ensure that blood flow is not cut off or the cyst is not rupturing.

Signs of a cyst that is near rupturing or a ruptured ovarian cyst are:

  • Fever
  • Intense pain (especially if you've had a cyst without pain and suddenly you have intense pain)
  • Dizziness
  • Sudden change in blood pressure
  • Shortness of breath
  • Bleeding

Keep in mind that you may or may not experience all of these symptoms.  Once again, seek out a physician if you are experiencing these symptoms.  They can be verified by a pelvic exam.

Finally, there are symptoms that are unique to the type of ovarian cyst you might have.  PCOS is an especially virulent form of ovarian cysts and is classified by the patient having two of the three common symptoms.  The symptoms of PCOS are:

  • An absence of ovulation
  • An excess of androgen (a masculine hormone)
  • Multiple cysts

A woman can be diagnosed with PCOS even if she does not have multiple cysts.  The important thing to note is that she only need exhibit two of those three symptoms.

Other common symptoms of PCOS include:

increased growth in body and/or facial hair
obesity
infertility
hair loss on top of head
absent, irregular or few monthly periods

It seems ironic that due to the increase in the masculine hormone androgen, a woman can at the same time lose head hair and yet develop more body/facial hair.
As with any medical issue, if you have any of the symptoms of ovarian cysts, you should get advice and treatment from a medical professional.

The bottom line is that symptoms are indicative of a condition that allows the ovarian cyst to develop and the best way of reducing your risk is to make good choices when it comes to exercise, nutrition, health care.  If you are suffering from an ovarian cyst and want to learn more, then read more here.
