can having ovarian cyst before pregnancy cause any problems during pregnancy?

ovarian cyst
Dr. Sick asked:

My girlfriend had ovarian cyst, she had a surgery and the cyst was removed from her ovaries, but her periods are still irregular and we both are pretty tensed about this scenario. =(

It probably won’t. Ovulation doesn’t happen while you are pregnant- the ovarian function is supressed by the pregnancy hormones. That actually can help in some cases, by giving the ovaries a rest. That’s the same thinking behind having women with PCOS take birth control pills. No ovulation, no cyst formation- exactly the scenario during pregnancy. If the surgery didn’t cause scarring enough to interfere with conception, it’s doubtful it would cause problems in pregnancy. The doctor will need to know about the previous surgery, of course. If you are TTC, your logical first stop should be the gyn’s office for a full exam and advice. After that it’s just a matter of practice.
