Ovarian dermoid cysts?

dermoid cyst
Layla asked:

I read up on what dermoid cysts are…but I still have a question about ovarian ones. I know it may be a ridiculously stupid question, but – lol I feel really dumb even asking this – can virgins have dermoid cysts on their ovaries? It’s not a cyst that develops from a failed pregnancy, right? Please don’t make fun of me :( I’m just concerned that I might have one (very painful left ovary and sometimes painful right one – I have a Dr. appt on Wed to see where the pain is coming from) and I want to know if even virgins can get them too. Obviously I’m not a virgin, but my family doesn’t know that I am sexually active and would hate to tell them this way, lol…please ease my mind…AND serious answers, PLEASE. If you don’t know the answer or feel the need to laugh at me…just go onto the next question. (And no, I’m not a dumb teenager, just a very misinformed 21 year old).

Thank you :-\

There are different types of cysts that women can get of their ovaries. I am 29, my husband has had a vasectomy. We were married for 6 years when my gyno discovered I had ovarian cysts. There was no way those cysts were caused by failed pregnancy. I had cysts covering both ovaries and wound up having a partial hysterectomy.
Insist on you doctor doing an ultrasound on your abdomen. If that doesn’t show anything and you still have pain INSIST on exploratory laproscopy. Trust me girl I went through the same thing. You have to be your own advocate!

i think by now they know your having sex.

it does not have to be from being sexually active.
it just happens sometimes… there isn’t much they can do for them.
Give you pain pills. or if they are bad enough and growing you will have to have them removed by surgery.

You will be fine. They will do a pelvic ultasound and see if your overies are okay. ( I had one today) Umm im not sure if they can do it in there office but they made me have a full blader b4 they could do it.
(4 bottles of water for me and hour at the doc office! yay. haha)

hope all goes well..

Yes it is entirely possible for virgins to develop ovarian dermoid cysts. Dermoid cysts are regarded to have begun developing before birth and as such are actually regarded as a congenital abnormality. They just don’t get diagnosed until later in life. (Although sometimes they are diagnosed in infants and children.) The Wikipedia article I have linked to below is a good summing up, but as you have already done some reading there may not be any new info there for you.

I had a large ovarian dermoid cyst removed surgically at the age of 34, when my gynaecologist found it completely by accident while performing a laparascopic sterilisation (tubal ligation). I had no symptoms and it was completely unexpected, so there you go.

You are doing the right thing by seeing your doctor. As other answerers have said, a pelvic ultrasound will soon show if there is anything there that needs further attention. And these cysts, while appearing a bit gross, are really kinda fascinating.

Good luck with your doctor’s visit. :-)
