I have PCOS and want to know if PCOS and thyroid disorders go hand in hand. Am I more likely to have a thyroid condition because of my PCOS? I have a doctor Appointment sceduled next week but was just curious if anyone knows or has a similar issue? Any suggestions or helpful websites?

I’ve never heard of the two being connected before. I’m curious as to what others have found concerning this.

Yes, apparently they have found a link between the two….it has been documented a lot lately actually.
It’s in this book too (see below). It’s amazing how many things are linked to PCOS, and as they are only just finding out more about the disease it’s good to keep up-to-date. The website below “soulcysters” is also really good because other sufferers post up things that sometimes you don’t realize are linked! It might be worth reading up a bit before your Dr’s appointment – often Dr’s don’t know so much about PCOS if they were trained years ago (unless you are seeing a specialist!). Good luck with your appointment! :)

If you have one autoimmune condition, you are prone to develop others. I know many women who have both hypothyroidism and PCOS. There was an article today on about.com about the connection between hypothyroidism and insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is a major symptom of PCOS. I’ll put link below.

If you test for thyroid, make sure its a morning test. An afternoon test often stops a diagnosis of hypothyroidism. It happened to me. Also, you’d want a free t3, free t4, and an antibody test. Most doctors only do TSH and they go by old standards as well, so if you get testing find out your numbers.
