What are the odds this ovarian cyst is cancer?

Ovarian Cyst
mama24 asked:

I have a large (10cm), septated, ovarian cyst and I’m 14.5. weeks pregnant. I’m 38 and this is my 4th child. The dr. says it’s blood-filled. What are the odds its cancer?? I am scheduled for surgery in two weeks and am very very scared.

Oh my how awful for you.

I do not know the odds, but do remember that doctors are ethically bound to tell you the truth. Did you ask the doc directly? If not, go back and ask. You may find that you are worried for nothing. Two weeks is a long time to wait.

Good luck to you.

Minimal.

If the doctor has already determined that its a stalked blood-filled or fluid-filled cyst, then that is most likely what it is.

Good luck…I’m sure you’ll do just fine.

If its blood filled, that makes it a probable hemorrhagic cyst. It probably formed from the corpus luteal cyst that normally forms after ovulation and last into early pregnancy. It is rather large, however, and it seems reasonable that the doctor would want to take it out – if it were to rupture, you could continue to bleed internally.

On a quick google, I don’t find significant links between hemorrhagic cysts and ovarian cancer. They do suggest a connection with ectopic pregnancy, however.

Good luck with your surgery. Hopefully everything will be OK.
